Question to US readers: Where is there a need for training?

Dear friends and colleagues,

I will be scheduling more live courses in the U.S. such as the two courses I am teaching in Sacramento in October..   I was wondering if any of you have a feel for where the most training is needed.

Which urban areas have the most problems with free-ranging dogs?

What areas have a demand for training with disaster response animal rescue?

What states have a demand for ACO training?

I welcome your suggestions and feedback!

Thanks,   Dr. Mark

  1. Hi Dr. Mark
I live in Asheville NC. Recently a hunting, trapping, euthanizing program has been started in Cumberland County NC, Fayetteville. I’ve encouraged officials in the county to contact you. I know of one dog that has been shot and killed. The dogs in this area are jumping fences, killing family dogs and cats. There has been a main concern of rabies and dogs attacking people. Dogs have not been reported attacking people but this is one of the main fears. There are over a hundred feral dogs estimated. A no-kill shelter is active in the community as well as a kill facility. They take in as many as 60 stray and abandoned dogs a week. We have a nightmare of back yard dog breeders/puppy mills in the south. Coupled with a crippling economy I’m afraid we are going to see more dogs/cats abandoned on back roads, parking lots and woods. United Animal Nations now known as Red Rover gave me your site. I’m also a member of Animal Asia and have been following the news relating to feral populations in India and Southeast Asia. Thanks so much for all the work you do for our beloved dogs and wildlife.

    • Pamela,
Thank you for your observations and kind words. And yes, there is still a lot of work to do here in the U.S.

Please encourage programs to contact me directly and let me know what information and training materials are needed.

  2. Hi, Dr. Mark,
There is a need for these services in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Maricopa County has the second largest shelter intake numbers in the US, second only to LA County. We also have a significant feral cat and dog population, as well as a large number of animal welfare organizations and rescue groups. I own a large pet boarding facility and would be able to offer this location for your workshops. I hope you’re able to come to our area sometime in the near future!

    • Cheryl,
Thank you for your great suggestion. I would be very interested in teaching my dog capture and handling courses in the Phoenix area. I will email you directly so we can visit.
      Dr. Mark
